Ballet Folklorico opens season for Alegria 2012
The Ballet Folklorico of the University of Texas-Pan American opens its Alegria 2012 concert season Friday, Jan. 27 with an exclusive premiere dinner and show.
The event at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium will include dinner at 6 p.m. and follow with a premiere viewing of Alegria 2012, a two hour dance concert featuring the magic, charm, and excitement of Mexico’s dance art.
The Ballet Folklórico is a thirty-two member organization comprised of students who are pursing degrees in a variety of disciplines. The Ballet presents student and public concerts annually and travels to present programs for local, state, national, and international private and public affairs.
The Ballet has jointly produced ballets, concerts, zarzuelas, and musicals with the Valley Symphony Orchestra, the UTPA Theatre, and the UTPA Music Department. In 1996, the Ballet traveled to Ottawa, Canada to perform in their Dieciséis de Septiembre Festival.
In 1999, the State of Texas House of Representatives honored the Ballet Folklórico with House Resolution N. 510. The Ballet Folklórico has been showcased at state and national dance conferences such as the Asociacion Nacional de Grupos Folklóricos, the American College Dance Festival, the North Texas Folkloric Festival, the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education and Dance and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Dance.
In 2006, the Ballet was one of 100 outstanding Texas artists chosen for inclusion on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster Program. In 2007, the Ballet was honored as one of ten top choreographies presented for adjudication at the American College Dance Festival in Fort Worth, Texas.
The concert series will continue for the general public on January 28, and 29 at 2 pm, February 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 2 p.m. and February 3, 10, and 17 at 7:30 p.m.
All concerts will be held at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium in Edinburg, Texas. Adult $10 presale tickets will be available at the IBC Bank Wal-Mart in-store branches Valley wide. Adult $12 tickets and child/ student $7 tickets will be available at the door one hour before each show.
