The University of Texas-Pan American is planning to stage two plays in the fall and auditions are scheduled for next week.
One play is “The Clockmaker from Cordoba” by Emilio Carballido. It is the story of Martin Gama, a young clockmaker, who is on a business trip when he suddenly gets arrested and charged with robbery and murder.
This surreal comedy is set in 17th Century Veracruz and is the work of one of Mexico’s most popular playwrights. There are more than 20 roles for ages 16 and up, roughly split between male and female.
The play will be directed by Dr. Eric Wiley.
The second play is “Evil Dead: The Musical” by George Reinblatt and others. A musical parody of the cult classic horror films by Sam Raimi, the play requires actors with strong singing, dancing and acting skills.
It is a fast-paced, gore-filled, campy send-up of the terros that befall five college students in a lonely cabin in the woods. The show will be performed over the Halloween weekend to satisfy the lurid cravings for blood from the audiences.
Auditioners will be required to sing at least 16 bars from a Broadway-style musical of their choice. Please bring sheet music of your song to the audition. There are roles for four college-aged women and six college-aged men.
UTPA is holding unified auditions for these shows in order to help students and community members plan their schedules for the fall, as it will be impossible to be in both shows. Auditions for BOTH PLAYS will be August 30 and 31 in the Studio Theatre and the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre, from 7-10 p.m. on both nights. Auditioners do not have to attend both auditions, but call-back auditions on Wednesday, Sept. 1, are possible.
Contact Dr. Brian Warren at bjwarren@utpa.edu or Dr. Eric Wiley at wileye@utpa.edu for more information on both shows. Scripts are available in the Box Office for a $10 refundable deposit.
