Dredging project to place sand on Island beaches

Work will soon begin to install the equipment necessary to begin the placement of material from dredging of the channel on South Padre Island beaches, according to a press release.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will start installing sections of piping on the beaches to carry the dredged sand material to the areas of the beach receiving sand.

The piping is large, measuring 30 inches in diameter, and sections are longer than a football field, between 500 and 700 feet long. Machinery will be on the beaches to place these large segments of pipe and the Corps will be constructing “ramp-like” structures to allow people to cross the sections of pipe safely.

Work is expected to begin soon, but the Army Corps of Engineers has not yet released an exact date and time. Keep checking back for any updated information. For questions about the material placement and length of the project contact Reuben Treviño at 956-761-3035.

Something funny is going on here. Last year they raised the bed tax, in part to help pay for beach restoration. Or at least that is what the voters were told, right? Now it looks like the US Army Corps of Engineers is footing the bill for this project, which seems to be turning into an annual event. So where did all that new bed tax revenue go? Was it soaked up into the general budget to help compensate for reduced revenue due to the slowdown in the overall economy?

It's great to see them rebuild the beaches, but that's a little more than sand they're throwing on the beaches, isn't it? That dredge material contains a lot of smelly black organic matter that rises to the top of the sand and stinks until it eventually decays or washes away. Hopefully the smell will be gone before the spring breakers arrive. I'm not complaining though, as the beaches really do need the sand, any way they can get it.
