Youth football camp features Tony Hill, goal-kicking contest
Dallas Cowboys legend Tony Hill will be in Brownsville this weekend for a youth football camp.
Hill will be joined by other former Cowboys’ greats to work on football basics with youngsters 5-18 years old at the Brownsville Sports Park from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Hill was drafted by the Cowboys in 1977 and spent 10 successful seasons with the Texas team.
He started his football career as a punt returner and backup wide receiver, but quickly landed a starting receiver position. He went on to become one of the top receivers in the NFL from 1978 to 1985, and was nicknamed the “Thrill” for his explosive on-field performances and ability to make big plays.
A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Hill led the team in both receptions and yardage for eight of his 10 years with the team. He made two Super Bowl appearances when the Cowboys defeated the Denver Broncos and the following year when the Texas team lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The registration fee for Saturdays Cowboys Legends is $25 and youngsters can sign up at the Brownsville Sports Park in advance of the camp. Registration will still be available on Saturday morning before 7 a.m.
And there’s a big event for parents, as well. Three names of parents of registered parents will be drawn to participate in a 40-yard field goal kick, with a prize of $10,000.
Proceeds from the football camp will go to support the Cameron County Children’s Advocacy Centers Inc., the parent organization of Monica’s House and Maggie’s House.
