Josh Turner to perform live at the RGV Livestock Showgrounds

Country star Josh Turner’s voice is as deep and rich as molasses is thick and slow, and he will be performing at the RGV Livestock Showgrounds Rodeo Arena in Mercedes Saturday night.
“Blender” magazine called Turner a “country Barry White.” It’s hard to deny that the sexy baritone has something to do with his success. Or maybe it’s because he has helped bring traditional country back into the spotlight, and on the charts that Turner has become a platinum-selling artist.
Turner’s first hit “Long Black Train” in 2004 was actually a smash hit, and catapulted him to recognition.
“I was headed home to South Carolina with my wife and I heard (‘Long Black Train’) actually on my hometown radio station in South Carolina,” Turner said in a recent interview. “And I just remember pulling off of the road to sit there and listen to it, and I mean, we were both just crying because it was such a huge moment in my life. It was something I’d been dreaming about for many, many years, so to hear it for the first time on my hometown station was pretty special.”
Success came swiftly after “Long Black Train” with “Your Man” and “Would You Go With Me” both hitting the No. 1 spot on “Billboard’s” Country charts. Six years later, Turner is still making hits – “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” the single off his latest album “Haywire,” sat at the top spot for four weeks.
Regardless of the amount of success Turner has had, it will never become easy for him.
“I think in some ways it’s gotten easier, but I don’t think it will ever get easy. It takes a lot of hard work to do what I do,” Turner said. “Most people see the glitz and the glamour and the lights and the show and me on stage in front of a camera and all that, but when the cameras are turned off, and the microphones are turned off there’s a lot of hard work that goes into getting to that point where I’m on stage and in front of a camera.”
The long hours and hard work that Turner puts into his job only goes to show his fans how much passion he still has, and will likely always have, for his career.
“It’s fun for me, because I feel like that was what I was born to do and this is what my calling in life is,” he said. “If I didn’t love it as much as I do, I probably wouldn’t or couldn’t do it.”
Tickets are $25 general admission and $35 floor seating and are available at Boots ‘n Jeans and Lionel’s Western Wear in Weslaco, Bullrider in Harlingen, Cavender’s and The Boot Jack in McAllen and Brownsville, RGV Livestock Show office and online at www.rgvlivestockshow.com.
