Surfrider Shindig 2010

If you love the outdoors, love to surf, love the beach and the waves, or if you just want to have a rockin’ good time with a bunch of friendly, laid back beach bums don’t miss this year’s annual Surfrider Shindig.

Surfrider is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting our planet’s ocean and beaches, and every year the South Texas Chapter holds their annual fundraiser at Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island.

This Saturday, Feb. 6, the event starts at 2 p.m. with a “Paint Off” featuring local artists John Olvey, Lisa Porter, Zach Richardson and Tommy Shilts. Bring your surfboard, skateboard, chair, flower pot or any item of your choice and have it customized by one of these fabulous artists for a small donation.

Bring the kids for trash can painting. Paint will be provided as the little ones get creative on county trash cans that will then be distributed along Cameron County beaches.

Come watch as local sculptor Andy Hancock will create a custom, wooden totem pole from scratch.
“Andy has generously come up with a unique way of donating his talent and work to the Shindig,” said Rob Nixon, chairman of the South Texas Chapter. “He will begin work at the beginning of the Paint Off on a totem that he will then donate to the whiteboard auction that night for one lucky bidder to take home and show off to their friends and family. What it will end up looking like, Andy doesn’t even know!”

At 6 p.m. the real party starts with live entertainment, buffet, Barefoot wine, raffles and give-aways. Local favorites The Bongo Dogs will headline followed by Bree Stevens and Junbug.

Bree Stevens is a local singer and songwriter from Brownsville who has performed at Bikefest, opened the 2008 International Music Festival, recorded an album and she hasn’t even graduated high school yet!

Raffles will include artwork from local talent like Chelsea Fedigan who is known for her bold, bright, comical portrayals of dogs, a brand new surfboard donated by On the Beach and two Continental Airline tickets, among many other exciting items.
