Lady Tarpons win bracket at Poundfest

The Lady Tarpons won their bracket at the Poundfest Volleyball Tournament last weekend. The first match saw the Lady Tarpons beating Brownsville Lopez 25-20, 20-25, 25-21. During the third set the Lady Tarpons found themselves down 21-11 when they settled down and played good defense allowing Morgan Malik to serve 14 straight points to win the set 25-21. Kristian Watkins led the offensive attack for the match with 8 kills.

The second match saw the Lady Tarpons up against La Feria. The Lady Tarpons defeated La Feria for the second time this season 25-12, 21-25, 25-18. The Team served good in the first and third games but struggled with their serve during the second game. Gabby Gonzalez led the team with 9 aces while Marrisa Hernandez and Kristian Watkins each had 4 aces. The offense opend up as all players contributed kills led by Morgan Malik with 8 kills, Kate Norton with 6 kills, and Gabby Gonzalez with 5 kills. Gabby also contributed 18 assists during the match.

In the Championship game the team came up against McAllen High School. The Lady Tarpons won the match 25-19, 25-23. The match saw both teams playing good defense which made for long rallies throughout the match. The middle Blockers of Kate Bowles and Mary Garcia gave the bulldogs a hard time to getting the ball past the net so they had to resort to tipping the ball to get it past the block. The tarpons recorded 7 blocks for the team and also had 84 digs during the match. Gabby Gonzalez and Belinda Barrera led the team in digs with 23 digs each. The team now looks to start district play this Saturday in Zapata.
