Frontera Audubon announces fall schedule

Frontera Audubon in Weslaco has announced a busy fall schedule beginning with its quarterly Brisket and Sausage Barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 11.  Tickets are $6 per plate and are available at the Visitors’ Center, 1101 S. Texas Blvd.
Proceeds benefit the organization’s 15 acre native urban preserve and Texas Landmark Skaggs House.  The public is invited to pick up a BBQ plate and spend some time picnicking and touring the grounds at Frontera.  Admission charges will be suspended that day for those purchasing barbecue plates, and the gift shop will be open for browsing.
Then on Sunday, Sept. 26, Frontera pulls out the stops for an evening benefit called “Feather Our Nest.”  The beautifully renovated home of Bud and Marlee Payne is the venue for live Latin jazz and a special showing of Michael Delesantro’s Valley Land Fund Photo Competition entries.  There will be wine & cheese, music by the pool and an exclusive art piece created by Dallas artist, Larry Whiteley, will be auctioned.
October is butterfly month at Frontera with weekly nature walks focusing on migration in Frontera’s butterfly gardens. Guided walks leave the Visitors’ Center at 10a.m. each Friday led by butterfly expert and naturalist Mike Rickard.
On Tuesday, Oct. 26, nature and wildlife photographer Bryan Reynolds will speak on the conservation of butterfly habitat at a special “Orchids and Butterflies” luncheon. Reynolds is the Founder, President and Executive Director of  The Butterflies of The World Foundation, an organization whose mission is to improve public awareness of the conservation of butterflies and butterfly habitat. Advance registration is required for the $20 lunch and program.  Lunch will be served at noon.
On Wednesday, October 27, Bryan Reynolds returns for a Butterfly Walk and Talk available just for Frontera members at no cost.  Bring your brownbag lunch and enjoy Frontera’s homemade cookies and punch before the presentation.
Frontera Audubon is a private nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the native environments of the Rio Grande Valley.
The Frontera Thicket is an urban sanctuary located at 1101 S. Texas Blvd. Weslaco. Open hours are Wednesday through Saturday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday: Noon to 4 p.m.  For more information, please call 956-968-3275.
