Music, seafood merge for Island festival

Fishing tourney, celebrity chefs add to event

The best of three worlds collide Sept. 18-19 when South Padre Island hosts the first Landshark Seafood & Music Festival.

“A lot of people have pigeon holed us as a country music concert because Kevin Fowler is the headliner,” said promoter Adam Brewer, “But we’ve got something for everyone from rock, funk and blues to reggae, metal and Tejano. Two of our Tejano stars are Grammy winners. We’ll even have an eight-piece orchestra inside the convention center playing Abby Road by the Beatles.”

Brewer and his partner Trey Edwards said they chose Fowler as the main act after extensive research.

“He’s one of the most successful country touring acts right now,” Brewer said, “and we were impressed with the crowds he drew when he played in Mission.”

This music festival offers more than music. For starters, it includes the Rock the Riviera fishing tournament sponsored by Jim’s Pier and Amberjacks restaurant. Participants will fish for redfish in one to four person teams with first place receiving $5,000. Entry fee is $175 per team.

“This is an eco-friendly tournament,” Brewer said. “The fish are brought to the dock in live wells and then they’ll be released. The top 10 fishermen will be awarded cash or prizes on stage during the concert.”

The Tournament is sponsored by the Texas Saltwater Series and will be televised on Fox Sports.

An added incentive to join the fishing tournament is participants get half off the admission price to the concerts and seafood festival and concert goers should be pleased with the price: only $20 a day for non-stop music on two stages at the Convention Center.

“We understand in this recession people can’t spend a lot of money on something like this,” Brewer said. “That’s why we made it a family friendly event. Kids 8 and under are free and we have a lot for them to do.”

Attractions for kids will include a School of Rock sponsored by Gibson where youngsters can experiment with different instruments, a kids’ band and DJ, face painting, and an inflatable Kids Land. Children get in for free when accompanied by a parent.

Also helping to cut the cost, parking will be free on the flats and a complimentary shuttle will run on both days until 2:30 a.m.

While the music plays outside the convention center, inside Chef Coi and Chef Husbands, two celebrity chefs from Fox’s television show Hell’s Kitchen, will be whipping up world class seafood, meeting the public and giving cooking clinics.

There will also be a large selection of seafood from other coastal restaurants, as well as the customary festival fare. Texas artists will also be displaying their works in the center.

Padre Rock is the official nightclub of the festival and will host an exclusive Thursday night VIP kick-off party and wrap-up party on Sunday. VIP passes for the festival are $300 and includes both days. Concert goers registered in the fishing tournament get half off this price.

VIP passes are all-inclusive, holders have access to side-stage, air-conditioned and catered VIP lounges with their own restrooms, meet and greets with the artists, VIP parking next to the venue, admission to VIP parties, gourmet food samplings, and discounted prices at area attractions.

“We’re really excited about this,” Edwards said. “It’s going to be a really cool event and we think we’ll be doing it here for a lot of years to come. We have a really special surprise for everyone Friday night and we’re already planning next year. All but one of the festivals we produce are still running.”

Brewer said they’re anticipating 4,000 to 5,000 people per day, but adds the venue can accommodate twice that many people.

“We’re just really happy to be here,” he said, “And we couldn’t have done it without our official festival ambassador Stormy Wall. He’s awesome.” Wall is the chairperson for the CVB Board of Directors.
