Surfrider Shindig supports beaches
Surfers and all beach lovers, it’s time for the annual Surfrider Foundation South Texas Chapter fundraiser and party.
The Surfrider Shindig: Music and Art for our Oceans, Waves and Beaches is in its third year and takes place Saturday, Feb. 4 at Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island.
“This year’s Shindig looks to be the best time to get together with and enjoy the fellowship of those that love their beach and the recreation and business opportunities is provides us,” according to a press release.
The Shindig is a day-long celebration of the South Texas Chapter’s achievements that features a variety of entertainment.
The event kicks off with the Paint-Off, where artists come together from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gravity Park across the street from Louie’s to turn surfboards, skimboards, chairs, driftwood and other beachy items into customized personal pieces of art for the attendee in return for a small donation.
Featured artists this year are Corpus Christi’s acclaimed surf artist John Olvey, Harlingen native and Galveston surfer Julissa Hampton, and Island locals William Lloyd and Becky McCormack.
At 4 p.m. the Shindig kicks off upstairs at Louie’s with live music from local surfer and skater Junior Valdez and John-Paul Fedigan of Junbug with their reggae infused acoustic music. Next on the stage will be headliner Moving Matter from Austin.
A silent auction featuring Texas surf photography and art and a shrimp boil will run through the evening.
