Road rage shooting leaves one dead

MISSION - A Mission man died during an apparent roadway shooting before dawn Friday, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.

Pedro "Pete" Hernandez, 35, was driving south on Farm-to-Market Road 492 when a second vehicle approached him.

A group of people inside the vehicle fired shots into his car and drove off. Hernandez was killed instantly and his car continued driving into a nearby field.

An autopsy conducted Friday afternoon showed the man died from two gunshot wounds to the head, Treviño said.

Hidalgo County sheriff's investigators believe the gunmen were driving a small, black two-door car with a sunroof.

There is no phone listing for Hernandez's family in Mission.

Authorities are still trying to determine a possible motive for the shooting.

Treviño refused to release a description of the suspects for fear of jeopardizing the case.

"We have plenty of leads," Treviño said. "But nothing we can put out right now."
