| It's a tough situation, that's for sure. It's obvious that many of those beachfront condos don't have enough parking during peak periods, not even close. There should be a law against building condos without adequate parking, even if most of the beachfront condos are empty most of the year. But, what's done is done. With regards to the side streets, there isn't much parking to fuss about, especially with all the fourplexes that have no street parking in front of them. Now put yourself in the shoes of an out of town visitor that comes in for a busy summer weekend. He rents a beachfront condo, but there are no parking spaces in the condo complex, so legally he has to walk a few blocks to park his car on the other side of Padre Blvd. That is completely impractical, especially if you need to go out to your car to get something late at night. What this new law is going to do is make tourists mad, at a time when the island most needs their money.
The Florence 1 condos bought a nearby lot on the other side of Gulf Blvd for overflow, and that seems to work OK. Perhaps they should phase in some kind of law that requires all condos to acquire nearby land for parking. Give it a reasonable period to comply, such as five years, or face penalties. |
