Car strikes, kills pedestrian

SAN JUAN — Investigators are trying to determine why an 18-year-old woman was walking in the middle of a road when a car struck her Thursday night.

The 64-year-old woman who was at the wheel told police she didn’t see Amira Luna in the middle of the 800 block of West Nolana, said Police Chief Juan Gonzalez.

“We don’t know why this 18-year-old was walking in the middle of the roadway,” he said. “Basically, it was an unfortunate incident that happened and we’re looking into it.”

The car struck Luna about 9:30 p.m., officials said. Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Rosa Treviño pronounced her dead at a local hospital later that night.

No criminal charges are being pursued against the driver, Gonzalez said. Police are still inspecting the car to make sure it was in working order.

“At this point, the motorist (had) the right of way,” Gonzalez said. “It was just an accident.”

There will be a viewing for Luna from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home, 621 E. Griffin Parkway, Mission. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Valley Memorial Gardens, 3605 N. Taylor Road, Mission, with a prayer service to follow.
