Lady Tarpons rack up volleyball victories

The Lady Tarpons volleyball team hosted Santa Rosa and La Villa High Schools at the Tarpon Gym on Tuesday.

The freshmen team started the night out by defeating Santa Rosa in two sets led by the hustle of Aubree Tamayo. The Varsity Team then took the court to play Santa Rosa’s varsity team. The team started out strong in the first game and won the match 25-11, 22-25, 25-12, 25-18.

In the match the middle blockers for the tarpons shined as they did a great job of controlling the net and closing the blocks making it hard for the warriors to get any strong attacks. The middle blockers Mary Garcia also contributed 4 kills while Kate Bowles contributed 11 kills for the match. Gabby Gonzalez also showed that she is still one of the better setters in the Valley as she contributed 20 assists during the match.

The second varsity match saw the Lady Tarpons going against La Villa. The Lady Tarpons tested their ability to keep fighting to the end of every game. In both the first and second set La Villa had a chance to serve for game point but the Lady Tarpons were able to hold it off and fight back to claim the wins in both of the games.

The Lady Tarpons won the match 27-25, 27-25, 25-15. During the match the team had a good balanced attacked as Gabby Gonzalez and Wuendi Flores did a great job of moving the ball around. In the match Morgan Malik had 11 kills, Kate Bowles had 10 kills, 3 aces and two blocks, Mary Garcia had 7 kills and 2 blocks, Gabby Gonzalez had 5 kills and 20 assists, Wuendi Flores had 6 kills and 10 assists, while Helena Loya led the way in serving with 4 aces.

The Lady Tarpons will see action this weekend in the McAllen Poundfest Tournament.
