Did you know that nearly one fifth of all Americans identify themselves as birdwatchers? That means nearly 70 million people in the United States claim they purposefully watch or listen to birds on a regular basis.
If you would like to get in on this activity, consider joining Team Talon. This birding club for 10-17 year-olds is your ticket to this popular pastime. Join the Edinburg World Birding Center naturalist, Gabe De Jong, every second and fourth Thursday of the month for informative sessions focusing on bird identification technique, biology, and ecology. Every session we will put our learning to practice with guided bird walks on EWBC grounds. The Team Talon birding group is also a great opportunity to meet new friends and share experiences outdoors.
Regular bi-weekly sessions will be after school, from 4-6:00 p.m. starting Thursday, Sept. 9. This is a youth-only program, but every month (on a Saturday) there will also be one family outing where visitors will explore the many other parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the Rio Grande Valley. The first of these outings will be to Estero Llano Grande State Park on Saturday, Sept. 25.
Individuals interested can sign up for the first three months at a reduced cost. For all six sessions EWBC members will pay $10 and non-members $20. Cost per individual session is $4 for non-members and $2 per member. Registration is required two days prior to each session, excluding those who’ve paid for the entire season. Binoculars and field guides are provided.
The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center is located at 714 S. Raul Longoria (in the Edinburg Municipal Park) in Edinburg. For more information call 956- 381-9922 or visit us online at www.edinburgwbc.org.
