No matches found.The Fishing Connection
In search of the monsters
Recently my buddy Wrongway took off on his annual migration back to his summer house in Nova Scotia.
His having flown the coop for the summer has left a hole in the fishing rotation.
So I made a call and in stepped Ernie Hammond.
Ernie and his Dad run the Laguna Mart in Laguna Heights.
Ernie and I boarded the Magic Carpet, the 18.5-foot Shallowsport, and set off in search of Monster Trout and Reds.
What we found was different for a change.
We found fish and lots of them, but couldn’t get any of the big Reds to hit except one 25-incher, but lots of small under sized ones would pick up the lures.
Instead it looked like the Trout were taking over the bay.
We both caught around a dozen Trout each, but didn’t keep any less than 17 inches.
We lost our share, also. Some threw the hook or wiggled off at the side of the boat.
Ernie was using a Pumpkinseed & Pearl & Chartreuse Norton Cocoho and I was using a 5-inch Top Water Spook.
Both were making it happen and frequently.
If the Trout didn’t hit the Spook they would follow it all the way to the boat.
Small Reds and all of the Trout were hitting both lures.
The water in the bay is getting a caramel colored stain to it with all of the fresh water there now, but it will go away soon and the fishing will get even better.
So work the pot holes and give the deeper water some time and hang on!
Have fun and be safe on the water.
