No matches found.The Fishing Connection: Big trout are taking over the potholes
Out on the water this past week was colder than a well digger’s butt.
Lots of fish were to be found, but getting them to bite was another story.
Wrongway and I ventured to the Intracoastal Waterway to see if we could catch some nice Trout, but we couldn’t take the cold and settled for drifting in front of the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge around Lookout Point.
Many nice sized Reds were roaming there, but couldn’t get them to take the lure.
Wrongway was catching some real nice Trout, 21 to 24 inches, on a 5-inch bone colored Spook.
I threw a spoon at the Reds there and didn’t get a response from anything.
Reports are that the big Trout are taking over the potholes everywhere in the bay and the big Reds are schooling on the east side of the bay.
These fish are mostly oversized so be ready if you find them.
I have heard that Anglers are taking some Snook up in the Brownsville Ship Channel and under the bridge crossing Highway 48.
South Bay is productive now, but with the low tides be careful, you may have to stay in the channels there.
The flats alongside of the Island have small schools of Reds roaming along with some keeper Trout.
Baits to use are live Shrimp, Mullet, Ballyhoo, Gulps, Top Water lures, Spoons and Cocohos.
