‘Miracle at Donna' Documentary traces ‘61 Redskins triumphant year
The year was 1961 and a group of Rio Grande Valley high school football players and their coaches made history.
It was the year that the Donna High School Redskins overcame a racially divided community to bring home a state football championship.
Determined head coach Earl Scott and assistant coach Bennie La Prade refused to be influenced by the racial divide and led a team of 10 latinos and seven anglos to a winning season.
That year’s Redskins team is the subject of a new documentary film, “Miracle at Donna,” which will make its premiere in a special screening at State Farm Arena on Thursday, Feb. 2.
The film is described on its website as “a miraculous story of a very special group of young men who overcame every imaginable obstacle and a town that overcame racial barriers sooner than the rest of the country.”
The film was produced by Frank Aragon, who says his mission in life to tell positive latino stories through film.
Among his film credits, Aragon is known as a producer of “Down for Life” in 2009.
The film starred Danny Glover, Snoop Dog, Kate Del Castillo, Elizabeth Pena and Jessica Romero, which made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009.
